Mesh-related Visceral Complications after Inguinal Hernia Repairs
Park Jin-Woo

Abstract
Inguinal hernia repair (IHR) is one of the most commonly performed operations in general surgery. Annually, more than 20 million patients undergo IHRs worldwide. Several methods are used for IHR, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. Consequently, there is no single method matching all situations. Nevertheless, the mesh-based IHR is recommended for adults with inguinal hernias. Although the mesh-based repair method has several advantages compared with conventional methods for tissue repair, complications associated with the mesh method are a cause of concern. Mesh-related visceral complications (MRVCs) can develop after both open and laparoscopic IHR. Reports on such MRVCs used to be rare, but are now increasing. In this review, the diagnosis, clinical manifestations, treatment, and preventive measures of MRVCs after different types of IHRs will be discussed.
